The Andes mountain range, the backbone of the American continent, reaches an altitude of 6,263 metres at its highest point in Ecuador: the Chimborazo volcano. It stretches from north to south, dividing the country in two. The two cordilleras, the Cordillera Occidental and the Cordillera Oriental, spanning some 400 kilometers, are home to the Inter-Andean Valley, where most of the major cities are located. These surprising and varied landscapes of volcanic origin, cradles of ancestral native populations, are for the most part easily accessible and home to a large number of different ecosystems and private and state nature reserves.
