Experience a day of cultural immersion in the Ecuadorian Andes.
Explore the vibrant indigenous market, witness centuries-old traditions, then journey through semi-desert landscapes to the Zumbahua valley. Marvel at the Quilotoa crater's emerald lagoon, and wander amidst traditional Andean crops before returning to Quito.
Today, we embark on a journey to explore one of the most authentic Indian markets nestled in the Ecuadorian Andes. Every Thursday, for over 500 years, communities from the high plateaus converge here to sell and barter their harvests and goods amidst a vibrant fair-like atmosphere teeming with colors, aromas, textures, and typical scenes. After immersing ourselves in this cultural spectacle, we venture into the heart of a semi-desert landscape adorned with xerophytic vegetation, including cacti, agaves, and thorny plants, en route to the Zumbahua valley. Here, we'll marvel at the rugged peaks and rolling hills adorned with a patchwork of traditional crops such as quinoa, amaranth, potatoes, and beans. By early afternoon, we'll arrive at the edge of the Quilotoa crater and its mesmerizing emerald lagoon, where we'll have the opportunity to stroll along part of its perimeter. Descending along a sandy path flanked by traditional Andean crops against the backdrop of the lagoon's reflective waters, we'll savor the tranquil beauty of the landscape. As the afternoon wanes, we say goodbye to the inter-Andean valley and journey back to Quito, reminiscing on the day's unforgettable experiences.
